When Jackie McAtee arrived at work at the Luepke Loaves & Fishes Center in Vancouver on Monday to pick up the Chevy Suburban she uses to deliver meals to homebound seniors in North Clark County, she discovered that someone had stolen the tires and wheels from the vehicle. She and other Loaves & Fishes Centers employees scrambled to find a couple of vehicles large enough to make the meal delivery. Local media ran the story of the stolen tires and within 24 hours, community members stepped up to provide new tires and the local Les Schwab dealership donated time and service to put on the new tires.
Beastie Boutique, located at 13023 NE Highway 99, and Happy Tails, located at 8056 E Mill Plain Blvd., donated the tires. The Les Schwab dealership at 2420 NE Andresen donated the service call, new wheels and wheel locks. NuStar Energy, located at 9420 NW St. Helens Road in Portland, donated $100 to cover any additional expenses associated with the tire replacement.
Loaves & Fishes Centers and the seniors it serves are grateful for the generous support of these businesses and their commitment to our vision that no senior will go hungry or experience social isolation.
Since 1970 Loaves & Fishes Centers has provided a nutritional and social lifeline for seniors through 35 meal sites in Multnomah, Washington and Clark counties and Meals-On-Wheels delivery to homebound seniors. With the help of more than 7,500 volunteers, the nonprofit, secular agency now serves 5,000 meals daily and more than 1.3 million meals each year. Loaves & Fishes Centers was named one of the “Ten Most Admired Companies” in Oregon in the non profit category by The Portland Business Journal in 2006.
