Weekday hot lunch service provided by Loaves & Fishes Centers will resume on Monday, Feb. 18, at noon at the Tigard Senior Center when the kitchen and dining room re-open. All seniors are invited to attend the re-opening. The lunch on Monday will feature a choice of either cheese ravioli with meat sauce or turkey and mashed potatoes with vegetables, a variety of salad selections, an array of fresh-baked desserts, milk and coffee or tea. The suggested donation for those age 60 and older is $2.75. The Center will be open early in the day for complimentary coffee and fresh-baked muffins and seniors are encouraged to come in early and see the new facility.
Tigard Loaves & Fishes Center is located at 8815 SW O’Mara in Tigard. The director is Karen Gardner and she can be reached at 503.620.4613. While remodeling on the rest of the building is still underway, seniors are asked to park in designated areas and access the building through the marked basement entrance. Stairs and an elevator are available to the dining room.
The staff and seniors at Tigard Loaves & Fishes Center are extremely grateful to Tigard American Legion Post #158, which has hosted the meal program since September to allow for a complete remodel of the Tigard Senior Center. The remodeling project, which is expected to be fully completed in March, was partly funded by a Block Grant issued to the City of Tigard, as well as funds contributed by Loaves & Fishes Centers and the City. Once the building is complete, a wide variety of activities will be offered at the center, including EnhanceFitness, ESL classes, wood carving, knitting, computers, quilting and card games.
Loaves & Fishes Centers has invested a great deal of effort into upgrading its meal sites over the past few years. At the Tigard site, in addition to a bright new kitchen with updated appliances and expanded work area, the bathrooms have been completely remodeled and the dining room has been repainted. When the senior center remodel is completed next month, it will also include a new library and classroom area. The Tigard Loaves & Fishes Center menu includes daily choice of entrée, salad bar and occasional ethnic cuisine. Kitchen Coordinator Theresa Thornton has a passion for both quality and presentation and prefers to use fresh, organic herbs and vegetables in her cooking. In fact, she grows most of the fresh herbs she uses in her home garden. Since joining Tigard Loaves & Fishes Center in 2007, Theresa has taken the basic menu and incorporated additional herbs, vegetables and garnishes. In addition, she roasts turkeys at the center and has developed a number of specialty entrées for the seniors at Tigard.
Loaves & Fishes Centers has managed the operations of the Tigard Senior Center since it opened in 1973 and provides all nutrition services and activities at the Center. Hot, noon meals are served Monday through Friday.
Since 1970 Loaves & Fishes Centers has provided a nutritional and social lifeline for seniors through 35 meal sites in Multnomah, Washington and Clark counties and Meals-On-Wheels delivery to homebound seniors. With the help of more than 7,500 volunteers, the nonprofit, nonsectarian agency now serves 5,000 meals daily and more than 1.3 million meals each year. Loaves & Fishes Centers was named one of the “Ten Most Admired Companies” in the non profit category in Oregon by The Portland Business Journal in 2006.
